Extended Multiwavelength Fuzz around Red Quasars: Observational Appearance of Radiative Feedback in Action

چکیده

Red quasars are a population, characterized by significant extinction in UV, which could be explained by absorption of dusty gas on a scale of a few kpc. We show that the enhanced radiation-pressure drives the dusty gas to supersonically expand and produces shocks. The shocks energize electrons to be relativistic via the first Fermi acceleration. As a balance of shock acceleration and synchrotron emission and inverse Compton scattering, the maximum Lorentz factor of the electrons reaches as ∼ 106. The shocked interstellar medium appears as extended multiwavelength fuzz, in which synchrotron emission from the electrons peaks at near infrared or UV bands and inverse Compton scattering around 1.0GeV−0.1TeV. Future multiwavelength images of the fuzz would provide new clues to study the details of radiative feedback if red quasars could be a certain phase in evolutionary chains of galaxies. Measuring the Virial Temperature of Galactic Halos Through Electron Scattering of Quasar Emission Lines

Semi-analytic models of galaxy formation postulate the existence of virialized gaseous halos around galaxies at high redshifts. A small fraction of the light emitted by any high-redshift quasar is therefore expected to scatter off the free electrons in the halo of its host galaxy. The broadening of the scattered emission lines of the quasar can be used to measure the temperature of these electr...

Extended Emission-line Regions: Remnants of Quasar Superwinds? a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate Division of the University of Hawai‘i in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Astronomy

Black holes are not only an integral component of galaxies, but they also appear to have played a fundamental role in galaxy evolution. It is theorized that galaxy-scale feedback from high-redshift quasars is key to understanding the properties of the most massive galaxies today. However, direct observations of the feedback have been lacking. Our observations on the extended nebulae around low-...

A Spectacular Post-starburst Quasar

We report the discovery of a spectacular “post-starburst quasar” UN J1025−0040 (B = 19; z = 0.634). The optical spectrum is a chimera, displaying the broad Mg II λ2800 emission line and strong blue continuum characteristic of quasars, but is dominated in the red by a large Balmer jump and prominent high-order Balmer absorption lines indicative of a substantial young stellar population at simila...

Host Galaxies of Young Dust-Reddened Quasars

We present results on a multiwavelength campaign to identify the nature of dust-reddened Type 1 quasars. These quasars were selected by matching FIRST, 2MASS and very red optical counterparts with r − K > 5. We find a very high fraction of Low Ionization Broad Absorption Line Quasars (LoBALs) among AGN selected with this method, perhaps a sign of quasar feedback. From X-ray observations and Bal...

Extended line emission around seven radio - loud quasars at redshift z ∼ 2

We present near-infrared spectra of seven radio-loud quasars with a median red-shift of 2.1, five of which were previously known to have Lyα nebulae. Extended [OIII]λ5007 and Hα emission are evident around six objects, at the level of a few times 10 −16 erg cm −2 arcsec −2 s −1 within ≃ 2 arcsec of the nucleus (≡ 16 kpc in the adopted cosmology). Nuclear [OII]λ3727 is detected in three of the 5...
